BMW Germany has revealed via its website that the range-topping BMW XM Label Red is now ready to accept potential buyers on a waiting list, confirming introduction of the super SUV to the market in summer 2023. Sadly, details on a US Label Red launch are still cloudy, but we should be accommodated not long after - production at the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant is scheduled to kick off in the summer.

The pinnacle of BMW M SUVs is yet to be fully revealed, but we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. A leak from September last year gave us a decent view of the vehicle, and a couple of high-resolution images posted by BMW have also presented most of the exterior styling. BMW has also previously confirmed that the Label Red will produce 738 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.

Those outputs come courtesy of the same combination of an electric motor and a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, as employed in lesser XM models. And just as the Label Red will improve on the performance offered by regular XMs, so too will its price swell. Pricing for the regular XM starts at $159,000 before options, while the Label Red will cost north of $185,000. And that's before you opt for any of the specialized BMW Individual finishes available to the regular XM models and which will likely be offered for the range-topper too. If those prices seem scary for a BMW SUV, remember that this vehicle was created as an image-maker and exists simply to lure buyers out of Lambo Urus and Bentley Bentayga SUVs.

We will probably have a chance to see just how much BMW's engineering efforts have transformed the hulking mass of metal into a corner carver later this year; BMW has tentatively entered an XM Label Red in this year's running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

This could prove an excellent marketing strategy or a huge disappointment, as Lamborghini's Urus Performante is officially the quickest SUV up the famed course. The Urus Performante, while lighter, has only 657 hp. Should the XM Label Red best the Lambo, it will be cause for celebration, but if it fails to come close, BMW will be mocked for the XM's weight and electrified elements. Either way, one of the ugliest BMWs ever made is almost ready to be let loose.
