It was not so long ago that the words "performance" and "diesel" would never be used in the same sentence, but then Audi won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel and everything changed. Even though BMW won't be looking to take on the Peugeot and Audi kings of diesel-powered racing at Le Mans in June, they will be bringing some extra diesel power to their street cars. The latest addition to the Performance line is a kit of the 2.0 four-cylinder.
BMW says the kit works with either the older 177hp version of the engine or the new 184hp version, and horsepower is boosted to 197 and 200 respectively. The kit is obviously not a huge change in hardware, but it includes new engine software, a larger intercooler and an improved radiator fan. BMW also offers a new chrome-tipped exhaust system which they say gives a sportier sound, although it will still sound like a diesel.
