Despite a lagging global economy these days, luxury car sales have been holding steady, especially in the US. The battle between Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz remains fierce on all levels, including high-performance models. According to a new report from BimmerBoost and Automobile, BMW is apparently looking at going above and beyond its M performance division to compete directly with Mercedes' AMG Black Series.

Speaking to Automobile Road Test editor Mark Noordeloos at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, a BMW PR rep said that it will be "an interesting year" in reference to one or two new products aimed directly at the likes of the C63 AMG Black Series. Noordeloos also spoke with several BMW executives at Detroit who hinted that the M division very much wants to offer an even more hardcore version of the M3 to US buyers, similar to the M3 CLS, GTS and CRT. No final decision has been announced just yet but if BMW can make a business case for such a model(s), then anything is possible.
