According to a recent press release, BMW is claiming they are developing a new 8-speed adaptive transmission that aims to identify road profiles and to understand driver's wishes. The German automaker is claiming that it's now possible to "adapt gearshift commands given by the transmission control system to each driving situation." Based off the current 8-speed gearbox, the new system will be linked to the car's navigation system and the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) in the initial phase.
BMW is also looking to link-up the system with cameras used for driver assistance systems and radar at a later stage of development. Basically, the data provided by the DSC, navigation system, and cameras can help the transmission adapt its shifting patterns and power delivery to properly suit current road conditions. No official time table has been announced for a possible debut, but it's likely the next generation 7-Series will be the first car in the lineup to benefit from this new transmission.
