Last year BMW sold 5,456 units of the i8. The hybrid is powered by a three-cylinder turbocharged engine and an electric drive system that combine to make 362 horses. Obviously the car is well-liked as it is the highest selling hybrid sports car in the world. Now, BMW is about to add to the i8's appeal by releasing special editions. The first of these will be the Protonic Red Edition. It will be built for a limited time at BMW's Leipzig, Germany, plant starting in July. The i8 will have Protonic Red paint finished with accents in Frozen Grey metallic.

The red paint will be complemented with BMW W-spoke 470 light-alloy wheels painted in Orbit Grey metallic with aluminum matte hubs. Inside, the red and grey motif continues with red stitching and carbon fiber accents. Frankly, we want to see what other special editions BMW releases because this just isn't very exciting. Sure they painted the car red, but special editions like this do little to blow our minds. Come on BMW, make an M8! Then we will be amazed. What do you think of this "special" i8?
