We already know that the newly revealed 1 Series is not coming to the US because BMW wants to send us the 2 Series Gran Coupe instead. However, both models will be underpinned by the same platform, which means we'll at least see some of the 1 Series' styling in the face of the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The four-door coupe's new platform will also be controversial since it'll be the first taste of a front-wheel-drive BMW we get in the US.

The 2 Series Active Tourer was the company's first FWD offering, but thankfully the American market was spared from the minivan-like creation. Looks-wise, BMW didn't have to do much to improve the 1 Series, but this segment moves quickly and BMW has decided to ensure the 1 Series' looks don't age too fast by giving it a slew of M Performance parts that'll be available at launch.

While the majority of options available in the M Performance catalog are cosmetic, the car can also be had with forged 18-inch jet black wheels paired with winter tires as well as a set of M Performance sport brakes. A set of bi-color 19-inch wheels are also available, but only if buyers opt for summer tires.

The sport brakes comprise of aluminum alloy four-piston calipers, which are finished in red and complemented by a set of larger front rotors while the rear axle gets a set of lightweight brake rotors and single-piston calipers. Visual upgrades include various aerodynamic aids like a performance front splitter, a horizontal-flow rear spoiler, and high-gloss side sill inserts.

There is also a carbon fiber rear diffuser and exterior mirror caps, while LED door projectors can light up the ground with the BMW M logo or with two other available designs. Inside, buyers can option an M Performance steering wheel, which adds an Alcantara grip area and can also be finished in carbon fiber and leather trim or with carbon fiber and Alcantara trim, while cars fitted with the Steptronic sports transmission can be had with carbon fiber shift paddles.

Velvet velour floor mats with an M Performance inscription finish off the interior changes. The M Performance updates may be subtle, but they do add a sporty air to the cabin. And while it's too early to tell, the addition of M Performance parts built for the 1 Series might also mean the 2 Series Gran Coupe will get its own set of parts from the M Division when it finally makes it to market.
