Within BMW's lineup, the recently revealed M3 sedan and M4 coupe represent perhaps the perfect balance of size and dynamism. But if you need more space and still want to embarrass some Ferraris off the line, you'll need something bigger. How about a pair of M-badged twins in the shape of the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition?

To celebrate these absolute brutes, BMW has lifted the covers off the limited First Edition variants of the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition, which are available with an exclusive matt paint finish and other tasty additions to set them apart. These are not the first First Edition products from BMW's M Division to be launched in recent years. Both the X5 M and X6 M certainly look the part and they've got the power to back it up.

Under the bulging hoods, both First Edition derivatives are equipped with the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering a titanic 617 horsepower. These SUVs don't handle like a big ship, though, thanks to a standard M-tuned suspension and the brand's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The standard X5 M already doles out 600 hp and can reach 60 mph in under four seconds, so that paints a picture of how serious of a performer these SUVs are.

Back to the First Editions, though. Both can be exclusively painted in BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver paint with a matt finish or another Individual color: Frozen Marina Bay Blue. They neatly complement the M light-alloy wheels measuring 21-inches in front, with the rears being 22s. Certain body elements are fashioned from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), such as the exterior mirror caps and the rear spoiler for the X6. Both receive an M carbon engine cover.

CFRP trim is available in the cabin, too, which features BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in bi-color Silverstone/Midnight Blue, along with black Alcantara inserts and contrast stitching in Sakhir Orange. First Edition lettering can be found inside, too, which bears the model number of each individual model.

Only 500 examples of each First Edition model will be produced (250 X5 M Competitions and 250 X6 M Competitions) and they are available to order immediately. BMW did not indicate pricing, but the regular X5 M begins at $105,000, so these limited models will certainly carry a premium over that. They will be built at the BMW Plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
