When BMW first announced it would create an SUV, fans of the brand caused a commotion. Why would a brand famed for its sports sedans and coupes venture into an unknown field? Well, the risk certainly paid off. In the US, the BMW X3, which is produced at the brand's Spartanburg plant, is one of the brand's best-selling models. It's the same story in Australia, where the luxury compact SUV also leads the way in sales.

As such, BMW Australia has released a highly-limited model of the popular Mercedes GLC rival and its coupe sibling, the X4. Dubbed the Frozen Edition, both feature unique embellishments that set them apart from regular variants, such as the brand's striking Individual Frozen Deep Grey metallic paint, with M Sport brakes finished in red for a pop of color.

Both models gain carbon fiber side mirror caps, with the X4 also receiving a rear trunk spoiler finished in the lightweight material. The exterior of both SUVs is finished off with black-painted M Shadow Line kidney grilles.

The Frozen Edition, limited to the dynamic M40i derivatives, also brings with it a host of cabin enhancements. For the first time, the X3 gains BMW's black Vernasca leather with red stitching and a Sensatec-trimmed instrument panel, also sporting novel red stitching. What's more, the carbon fiber treatment has been carried over to the interior, now decorating the dashboard, center console, and door trim.

Lastly, the seatbelts receive the M treatment, boasting stitching in the performance subsidiary's famed tricolor design. In total, just 37 models will be made available to the Australian public. As for cost, the X3 and X4 M40i Frozen Edition will retail for A$142,900 (approx. $105,400) and A$152,900 (approx. $112,800). While that's far more than what US consumers pay for the regular model, it's worth noting it doesn't represent a big price increase in the Land Down Under.

As a reminder, the X3 and X4 M40i are both powered by the same silky smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six with 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque on tap. Already desirable in their own right, the Frozen Editions of these sporty crossovers elevate their desirability and add some exclusivity to the model lines. We're pretty sure BMW won't have any problem finding willing buyers for these menacing special editions. After all, markets all over the world continue to get their own special models.

Just recently, the German brand revealed the Dark Shadow Edition of the X4, seen below, to commemorate the SUV's arrival in India. We also recently saw the X2 GoldPlay Edition. Finished in Green with Gold exterior trim, it's not to everyone's taste, but it sure is eye-catching, and that's what people seem to like from special editions. Expect even more limited models this year.
