BMW Will Reclaim The Title Of Grand Touring King With A New 8 Series

Luxury

We’re a bit sad to say it will be more Bentley than Ferrari.

Fear not doctors and lawyers, because even though the 6 Series will morph into a track-gobbling performance car to go after the likes of the Porsche 911, BMW will still keep a luxury two-door grand tourer in its lineup that can ruin a peasant’s day. Proof of this comes from the fact that a BMW insider has told Auto Express that its recent patent filings for the names 825, 830, 835, 845, 850, M850 and M8 mean that an S-Class coupe competitor is on the way.

Given Mercedes’ success with the S-Class coupe, the 8 Series will likely adopt the snob appeal of the Merc instead of looking like a modified 7 Series. However, unlike Mercedes, BMW probably doesn’t want to swim too high upstream where it could give a Bentley Continental GT some trouble. The reason why is that a move like this could mean cutting into sales of the Rolls Royce Wraith, the Continental’s direct competitor. Instead, the 8 Series would offer a entry-level grand touring option that would fill in the shoes of the current 6 Series and potentially give the S-Class coupe a run for its money. Unlike the Wraith, the 8 Series would keep BMW's sporting heritage, meaning that it should look more like a sports car than a chariot.

We had high hopes about a BMW supercar coming back to raise hell in the establishment, but in this case, we can expect it to rival the S63 AMG coupe rather than a Ferrari 488 GTB. With a wide array of BMW engines including the 6.8-liter V12 from the Rolls Royce Phantom or the 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 from the current M6, there should be no trouble filling the engine compartment. The previous generation M8 had V8 and V12 options, but we can expect the new M8 to help drivers find high-speed nirvana with around 600 horsepower from a snarling V8 in order to save weight. No mention has been made as to when the 8 Series would be released, but the BMW source said that the change for the lineup would be “imminent.”
