New BMW X2 Heads To The Nurburgring For High-Speed Testing

Spy Shots / 2 Comments

It was just this week that BMW broke the news, too.

Earlier this week, we received confirmation from BMW that the X2 was at its end.

Word on a replacement is scarce, but our spies have captured what may be the X2's replacement as the last model takes a bow. We believe we're looking at our first shots of the new BMW X2 M35i.

Our spies found this prototype at the BMW M test facility near the famous Nurburgring, where it also put in a few hot laps. Obviously, there's a lot to go over here, as the styling of the new X2 has changed dramatically. We also know that the new X2 is going to be based on the X1, as well as sharing the interior with it.

The styling more closely resembles the rest of the 2 Series lineup, with boxy front kidney grilles and intakes. You can even see a little of the new M2 in the SUV.

From what we see, the M-spec car will get bigger brakes, lower ride thanks to some sporty springs, and a slightly different lower fascia with larger intakes.

Around the back, the new model gets some sportier quad exhaust tips. Again, these are likely to be donated right off the X1 because the two are corporate siblings. You could use the current X1 to peel back the camo a bit. We already see some similar bits, like the grille shape, lower fascia, and the wheels. In all likelihood, the X2 will be extremely similar.

The M35i version of the new 2 Series Coupe should produce roughly 306 horsepower. We're basing that on the new M35i versions of the 1 and 2 Series Gran Coupe, which have roughly the same power. However, BMW could try to gain more from the SUVs, presenting a greater challenge to the Mercedes GLA-Class.

We'll have to wait for more details from our spies, as we don't have any info for you on the state of the interior just yet. However, we expect iDrive8 as it appears to be the new normal for BMW.
