BMW has a weird and wonderful love affair with Japan. Despite the country being relatively small, BMW regularly releases limited-run special editions for the Japanese market. We've previously seen M5s inspired by Mission: Impossible, 8 Series Gran Coupes that look like they belong in an art exhibit, and many more unique vehicles for the small Asian nation. But BMW has another special edition for Japan. Meet the BMW X7 Frozen Black Edition.

Built exclusively for Japan, only 40 of these unique X7 SUVs will be available. You can't walk into a BMW dealership and order one, though, as all 40 will be sold through the BMW online store. So what is it that makes the X7 Frozen Black Edition so special?

Well as you might imagine, the theme is black. The large luxury SUV wears Individual Frozen Black paint, a matte finish that BMW Japan refers to as the perfect jet black. Anything that might be chrome on the regular X7 is blacked-out too, meaning the kidney grilles, window surrounds, tailpipes, and everything else is all black. BMW Individual Style 758i alloy wheels are finished in the same shadowy hue, and the M-sport brake calipers housed within are also finished in black.

Inside, the X7 is configured as a six-seater with individual second-row captain's chairs. The leather can only be optioned in one color - black - and the extended Merino leather option has been ticked for more leather on more surfaces. Where there isn't leather, you'll find BMW's piano black trim, and the roof lining is BMW Individual Alcantara in a finish BMW calls Anthoragit. To you and I, it's black.

If this treatment sounds familiar, it's because BMW previously released special editions of the 8 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe in Frozen Black Edition guise for Japan. These had the exact same specification.

Power-wise, the X7 Frozen Black Edition is based on the X7 xDrive40d M Sport, equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six diesel engine producing 335 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. This is sent out to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The X7 Frozen Black Edition went on sale as of October 28, and we're sure almost all of them have been snapped up already. They don't come cheap though. At a price of ¥14,660,000, they work out to approximately $128,000 at current exchange rates. In the US, the vastly more powerful X7 M50i has an MSRP of $99,800.
