Brabus Tunes Mercedes SL to 520 HP

Tuning / Comments

If the standard 435-horsepower Mercedes SL550 isn't good enough for you, then the talented tuners over at Brabus may have just the ticket.

German high-performance tuning firm Brabus is certainly no stranger to uber-powerful Benzes. With a specific focus on Silver Stars, Brabus has now turned its attention to the newly-redesigned Mercedes-Benz SL-Class roadster. Already a powerful beast in stock form, Brabus has managed to up the Benz convertible by several notches by way of some good old-fashioned engine refinements along with various exterior and interior enhancements to take the SL from boulevard cruiser to veritable bruiser.

Beginning under the hood with its 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8, Brabus installed what it calls a PowerXtra module with plug-and-play capability that helps to generate additional power. Along with an auxiliary water-to-air intercooler and a stainless steel sport exhaust system, output was been increased from 435 horsepower to 520 hp and 604 pound-feet of peak torque. Brabus also installed a top speed limiter but buyers can choose their preferred maximum speed of 155, 172 or 186 mph. The coupe's 0 to 62 mph time has also been improved to a blistering 4.4 seconds.

To help to further distinguish it from the stock SL, Brabus gave the car a number of exterior upgrades that include more dramatically styled front fenders complete with side air vents, along with a new rear spoiler and side skirts. Wheels can be had in 18-, 19- or 20-inches in three different designs. Customers can also individualize the interior to their specific tastes, examples of which include scuff plates with a backlit Brabus logo, carbon fiber or fine wood trim in nearly any color as well as special Brabus upholstery shop leather and Alcantara. Official pricing hasn't been announced.
