BREAKING: Honda To Develop Electric Cars With Sony

Industry News / 7 Comments

The two companies will be a formidable combination.

As cars become more connected than ever in the age of electrification, automakers are joining forces with technology giants to make the integration of new features as user-friendly as possible and speed up development. Ford and Google have done some cool things together, while Stellantis struck a deal with iPhone maker Foxconn last year for the development of all-new in-vehicle experiences. But while these automotive and tech pairings are exciting, Honda has just announced something far bigger with Sony Group Corporation. The two companies plan to establish a new joint venture known as the New Company and will develop EVs together under this umbrella.

Sony and Honda have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together in creating a new era of mobility and mobility services. This strategic alliance could give Honda a major boost in the EV sphere considering that the brand currently sells exactly zero EVs in the USA - it does have a few hybrids like the Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid, though. The New Company is expected to begin sales of its first EV as early as 2025; this news follows a Sony executive's recent statement that the tech giant was looking for new technology partners for its EV project. To start 2022, Sony already revealed its electric SUV known as the Vision-S 02.

The Honda-Sony alliance will fuse the Japanese automaker's mobility development capabilities and Sony's expertise in areas like entertainment technologies, telecommunication, and imaging technologies.

"The New Company will aim to stand at the forefront of innovation, evolution, and expansion of mobility around the world," said Toshihiro Mibe, Director, Representative Executive Offer, and CEO, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. "Although Sony and Honda are companies that share many historical and cultural similarities, our areas of expertise are very different. Therefore, I believe this alliance which brings together the strengths of our two companies offers greater possibilities for the future of mobility."

Whereas Sony will develop a mobility service platform for the New Company, Honda itself will manufacture the first EV model. The New Company will then "plan, design, develop, and sell the EVs."

Sony itself is similarly upbeat about the new alliance with Honda. President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation, Kenichiro Yoshida, pointed to Honda's "extensive global experience and achievements in the automobile industry" and says that Sony's vision is to make mobility "emotional". In three years from now, we look forward to seeing the New Company's EV hit the market to duke it out with the likes of Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota.
