There have been several spy shots of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster over the past few months, but now the German automaker has released a few new pictures of the car undergoing final testing. While there are still bits of camouflage tape covering the emblems and parts of the trunk, headlights, and taillights, these are still the most detailed pictures released to date. No word yet on which engine will be powering the car.
However, the 6.3-liter naturally-aspirated unit from the gullwing coupe and the new 5.5-liter turbo eight are both contenders. Still, the Mercedes press release did say the roadster will be rated at 563 hp, which is the same output as the coupe. In all likelihood, it will be the 6.3. AMG also claimed they have strengthened many areas of the roadster so that it will perform as well as the coupe. They added additional support at the windshield frame and center tunnel. Engineers also added a cross-member behind the seats.
The three-layer fabric soft top, which has been put through brutal weather testing and endurance, can be opened and closed at speeds up to 31 mph. Amazingly, it can be driven at its 197 mph top speed with the top down. The SLS AMG Roadster will debut this September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
