While Toyota and Scion announced several months ago the names of their version of the upcoming rear-wheel-drive coupe (the FT-86/FR-S), Subaru remained quiet on the matter for their version. There have even been three combined concepts shown of the FT-86/FR-S, but there's only been a brief display of the Subaru at last spring's Geneva show, although that was just a plexiglass concept showing off its boxer engine.

But now, Subaru has caught up to their fellow Japanese partners as they've officially released the name: BRZ. The letters stand for Boxer engine, Rear-wheel drive, and Zenith, which, according to their press release "embodies ultimate passion for the new sports car and confidence in its distinctive trademark and core technology: the 'Horizontally-Opposed' Subaru Boxer engine." Subaru has also announced they'll be unveiling a "technology concept," called the BRZ Prologue, at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month. No pictures of the concept were released, only this brief logo teaser.
