Late last year, French hypercar manufacturer Bugatti announced the opening of a bespoke program to fulfill the fantasies of its most well-heeled customers. Called Sur Mesure (French for Tailored), the program aims to make it clear to these super-wealthy individuals that there is no limit when it comes to personalizing your car.

In fact, the first Chiron Super Sport deliveries kicked off with an example that boasted what Bugatti calls 'Vagues de Lumiere' paintwork, and now that spectacular creation has been followed up with one that uses the same techniques.

The new one-off being presented here also features light-inspired hand-painted artwork in a Nocturne shade over exposed Blue Carbon bodywork. On the rear wing, each endplate gets the tricolor of the French national flag while the number 9 is painted on the horseshoe grille in French Racing Blue. Inside, the theme is expanded with a leather color split of Beluga Black and French Racing Blue.

Bugatti says that "the intricate process of creating these extraordinary paint schemes takes around five weeks, beginning with the creation of a number of 2D shapes, which must be applied to the car's 3D surfaces with millimeter-perfection." Thereafter, layer upon layer of hand-applied paint is laid "to develop a deep color pattern to create the illusion of light reflection." Finally, a number of layers of clearcoat are applied to enhance depth and preserve the effect.

Arguably the ancestor of this level of detail is the 2011 Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport L'Or Blanc, which saw its porcelain-infused (yes, really) body finished in a white and blue design that also created the effect of natural light flowing over the car. Thereafter, 2019 saw the arrival of the 'Zebra 1 of 1' that was painted in a unique Titanic Blue and Gunpowder Grey theme. We're sure that yet more light-inspired looks will come in time, along with many other unique ways of expressing originality through bespoke design.

Bugatti president Christophe Piochon had this to say on the new creations and the future of Bugatti customization: "The 'Vague de Lumiere' paintwork applied to these two examples of our hyper sports cars embodies Bugatti's fundamental philosophies; craftsmanship, innovation and heritage [...] I'm truly excited to witness what our customers, alongside the Sur Mesure team, create in the years to come." So are we.
