This is one sedan we're sad to see go.
Opel and Vauxhall have unveiled the new redesigned Insignia, and it looks very stylish. In the US, the Buick Regal GS sedan is essentially a rebadged Insignia, so there was a chance the Regal could be updated in America with the same design changes. Sadly, this won't be happening because the Regal is being discontinued. In a statement, Buick confirmed to us that the Regal will not return for the 2021 model year. Blame the booming popularity of crossovers.
To put things in perspective, nearly 90 percent of all Buick sales this year have been crossovers, so keeping the Regal on sale seems hard to justify. Sadly, this means yet another sedan has become a casualty of the crossover craze. But while the Buick Regal will no longer be sold in the US and Canada for the 2021 model year, it will still be available in China where there's still a strong demand for sedans.
"Buick continues to be ahead of the consumer shift toward SUVs. In fact, nearly 90 percent of Buick sales to date this year have been crossovers and sales have outpaced key competitors including Lincoln, Acura and Infiniti," Stuart Fowle, Buick and GMC communications manager, told CarBuzz.
"Our lineup of premium SUVs will expand in the coming months when the Encore GX will become the fourth SUV in our portfolio, joining well-established nameplates such as Encore, Envision and Enclave."
"Combined, these four premium SUVs give customers a great range of size, performance and innovative technologies in the industry's largest and fastest-growing segments, all connected by the strong design statement core to the Buick brand. Although the Regal will no longer be offered in the US and Canada, it will be sold in China where demand for sedans remains significant."
So far this year, Buick has only shipped 7,000 Regals in the US, so its demise was inevitable. The 2020 Buick Regal is sold in three guises: the Regal GS, Regal Sportback, and Regal TourX. If you were thinking of buying a Regal, you might want to act fast while you still can.
