Build The Greatest Coffee Table Ever With This Ferrari F40 V8

For Sale

Or install it in an actual Ferrari F40.

The Ferrari F40 is one of the greatest cars ever made. Only 1,311 were built between 1987 and 1992. The F40 was also the last Ferrari personally approved by Enzo Ferrari before he died in 1988. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V8 making 471 hp and 426 lb-ft of torque, F40s will forever turn heads everywhere they go thanks to its sound and Pininfarina-designed body. Be prepared to pony up around $1.5 million if you want one. Or, as we’ve discovered on Bring a Trailer, you can just buy the V8.

As of this writing, the highest bid is $21,000 on the car auction website, but there’s still several days left to place a bid. A brand new Hellcat V8 crate engine, by comparison, will cost you just under $20 grand. But it’s important to know one crucial fact regarding this F40 V8: it comes fully disassembled. According to the listing, the engine was built in 1992 and soon went on display at the Designed for Speed exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art for a year beginning in 1993. The engine was built to production spec but lacked an assigned chassis. Fortunately, it still retains a factory dyno-tested stock block, used crankshaft, bearings, and used pistons.

Its latest owner and seller bought it complete in 1998 and also used it as a showpiece for several years. The guy, conveniently enough, also owned a complete F40, and therefore used some of the display engine’s components to return his car’s engine to stock form. The winning bidder will receive a crate delivery with the original block with custom steel cylinder liners, custom-machined and ported cylinder heads with larger valves, titanium valve train, and custom cams. The intake manifolds have also been ported and modified for larger injectors. Several spare parts are also included. It even comes with a rolling stand.

Now, it’s vital to bear in mind a few things before deciding whether to make a bid: are you mechanically capable to handle reassembly? Do you already own an F40? But on second thought, if you can find someone to rebuild the engine just so that everything holds together, you could turn this Ferrari F40 V8 into the greatest coffee table of all time. Just saying. Photos courtesy of Bring a Trailer.
