OK, so you may not have it in time for Christmas, but Volkswagen has just announced that starting January 8 it will begin accepting orders for its most powerful Golf ever, the new Golf R. For now, only the 500 unit launch edition is being offered, but that's certainly not a bad thing. Each one is identical, featuring Lapiz Blue Metallic exterior paint, bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, 4Motion all-wheel drive, and 19-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in summer performance tires.

Inside, there's a nav system and a Fender premium audio system. The first 500 Golf R owners will also receive an accessory kit that includes a serialized Volkswagen R watch, carbon fiber/stainless steel keychain, and a serialized VIN-specific certificate. Power comes from the familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four banger that produces 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It's paired exclusively to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. All you have to do is head down to your local VW dealership or head to vw.com/golfr. If you want to secure your launch edition Golf R, VW is asking for a $500 deposit. The car itself will cost $39,910 including destination.
