Just over a year after revealing it in concept form, Volkswagen recently announced that a production version of the Golf R400 was heading to production. This isn't just any old Golf hot hatch; this sucker will be the most powerful Golf ever thanks to a reportedly new turbocharged 2.0-liter four rated at least 400 hp (420 has also been rumored). Expect all that power to be sent to all four wheels via a dual-clutch gearbox. Will it come to the US? That's still unknown, but what we can confirm for you today is that VW is truly following through with the car.

Our spy photographers just snapped a series of images showing an R400 test mule in Germany. Yes, it is wearing Golf R skin but look closer and you'll notice quite a few details, such as cross-drilled brake rotors and big calipers. There are also sportier wheels and low profile tires, a front lip spoiler and a prominent oil cooler behind the grille. Also note the large rear wing that's apparently been borrowed from the GTI Clubsport. What we also know is that the R400 won't come cheap; some have estimated it'll cost as much as 50,000 euros. We'll hopefully see the production version revealed this September at Frankfurt.
