A report earlier this month indicated that Cadillac may not turn its newly unveiled CTS sedan into a coupe after all, as was done for the outgoing generation. Instead, sporty coupe duty was rumored to fall into the ATS's territory, but we haven't been able to confirm that 100 percent– until today. Thanks to our always intrepid spy photographers, we're able to bring you the first images of an ATS coupe test mule caught testing in the metro Detroit, Michigan area.

Despite the images being a fairly bright due to a camera malfunction, it's now clear that Cadillac continues to take clear aim at its German luxury brand rivals, only this time in the form of the Audi A5, BMW's upcoming 4 Series and the Mercedes C-Class coupe. Like its sedan counterpart, expect for the ATS coupe to have the same engine lineup which includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pumps out 272 horsepower and a naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter V6 that's good for 321 hp. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 202 hp comes standard. Rear-wheel-drive is of course standard while all-wheel drive is optional.

Sources also indicate that Cadillac had hoped to begin ATS coupe production as early as this July but that date has reportedly been pushed back to January 2014 for unknown reasons. More than likely, Caddy wants to give the sedan more time in the spotlight. It's also been rumored that an ATS wagon and convertible were also in the running but for now it appears both won't be happening. Fortunately, the high-performance ATS-V is still very much a go, but we're still at least a year or so away from its debut.
