Cadillac Could Jump Into The Supercar Game By Reviving The XLR

Let's face it, Cadillac's attempt to build its own version of the Corvette was a failure. The XLR was the American answer to the Mercedes SL, and even though that car has lost some of its historic luster, it was still miles better that Cadillac's car. Despite the XLR surviving until 2009, it was based on the old C5 Corvette platform. It also made use of Cadillac's maligned Northstar V8, rather than the excellent LS6 that was available in the CTS-V and Corvette Z06. The XLR might be classed as a failure, but we think it deserves to live again.

The current C7 Corvette is an astonishing car, but it seems very unlikely that Cadillac will make the same mistake of just rebadging the Corvette again. Besides, we think that the Z06 Corvette has already done enough to be a value proposition against more expensive sports cars from Italy and Germany. If GM really hopes to get on the supercar map, it needs to be accomplished using the Cadillac brand. One of the biggest issues for affluent buyers is that despite its many endearing features, the Z06 is still just a Chevy. There are many rumors floating around that GM is working on a mid-engined Corvette for the C8 generation, but we think that this rumored prototype should be a Cadillac instead.

If the C8 Corvette really does end up being mid-engined, it could finally end speculation that is decades old. Dating back to the 1970s, people have been wishing for a mid-engined Corvette, and this rumored C8 ZR1 Zora could be that car. However, the Corvette brand is one that we don't think should be messed with. There are few American cars that have a more storied history than the Corvette, and playing with that formula could be risky. That is why introducing a mid-engined Cadillac sounds like the better idea. By calling this new car the XLR, or even something new, GM can avoid any bias that may exist with the Corvette name and avoid messing with the Corvette legacy.

As we said before, the XLR was not a huge success, and its name may not be appropriate to put on what should be a very expensive new model. That is why we propose the new name, V0. V is Cadillac's performance brand that is attached to the brand's best cars like the CTS-V and ATS-V. We think that naming this mid-engined car after the performance arm of Cadillac would give it credibility among supercars. This is a similar tactic that Mercedes took with the AMG GT, giving the car a name that starts with the company's performance brand. Cars like the CTS-V have proved that they are more than capable of taking on the German competition, and so too could a Cadillac supercar.

Cars like the Corvette and Dodge Viper have always had a brand-image problem among the wealthy circles that can afford to buy them. Even though both of these cars are incredibly fast, some buyers want to know that they are buying a car that also has a prestigious badge. Cadillac has proved that it can build some good cars, but we think that a supercar is just what the company needs to be looked at as a serious threat. Just imagine a mid-engined Cadillac with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 putting out 650 to 700 horsepower. We think a lot of Ford GT owners would be clamoring to break those silly contracts with Ford to swap their cars for a Cadillac V0.
