Last month we found out the completely redesigned fifth-generation Cadillac Escalade will be delayed from the 2020 to the 2021 model-year. Those who were anxiously waiting were probably a bit disappointed. But the good news is that Cadillac's big and bling-tastic SUV isn't going anywhere. In fact, the Escalade is more vital than ever for GM's luxury brand not only because of the resurgence of SUVs in general but also because of the redesigned and hot-selling Lincoln Navigator. Cadillac is no mood to let this important segment slip away.

Fortunately, the new Navigator also provides Cadillac a benchmark to beat, and according to leaked insider information from Cadillac Society, the 2021 Escalade will have one thing bigger and better than the Navigator: a "huge" center screen. Reports indicate it will be twice the size of the current eight-inch-diagonal unit.

It will also incorporate new advanced human-machine interface (HMI) controls that will "build upon" the combination of a touchscreen and new rotary controls. These are being influenced by what's found in the new 2019 XT4 and CT6, as well as the rest of the new Cadillac lineup. In addition, this new massive center screen will be accompanied by an all-new digital instrument cluster that's reported to be "significantly better" than the 12-inch gauge cluster found in today's fourth-gen Escalade. Sources claim both screens will have "high levels" of integration with one another. Not surprisingly, this new large screen likely won't come standard on all trims.

What's more, it may not even be ready to go when the 2021 Escalade makes its first appearance. Instead, it could be introduced for the 2021 interim or 2022 model years. What we know for sure about the next Escalade is that it'll ride on the same all-new, body-on-frame chassis architecture as the current Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. And because the vehicles share platforms, the redesigned Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon twins will also be delayed. Let's hope the extra wait will be worth it.
