Every year, the World Car of the Year jurors meet up to declare five winners that encompass the best of the automotive industry. The categories include World Luxury Car, World Urban Car, World Performance Car, World Car Design of the Year, and the coveted World Car of the Year title. For 2020, Mazda had a pair of top three finalists for Car of the Year with the 2020 Mazda3 and the 2020 Mazda CX-30, while the 2020 Kia Telluride made up the last contestant.

The results were supposed to be announced on April 8 at the 2020 New York International Auto Show. Since the show was postponed, the winners were announced via live stream instead. 86 automotive journalists from around the world cast their ballots and the overall winner is... the Kia Telluride!

We aren't shocked by this result, as the Telluride won our first-annual 2019 CarBuzz Family Fun award. The Telluride beat our 28 other vehicles for this honor, cementing its place as one of the best SUVs on sale right now. With handsome styling, amazing luxury features, and an affordable price tag, the Kia Telluride truly deserves this prestigious honor.

Kia had more to celebrate as well, because 2020 Kia Soul EV took home the 2020 World Urban Car award, beating the Mini Electric and the Volkswagen T-Cross. Mazda didn't lose out completely, though. The mighty Mazda3 earned the 2020 World Car Design of the Year award over the handsome Peugeot 208 and the futuristic Porsche Taycan.

2020 was a great year for Kia with two cars bringing home two awards but Porsche faired pretty well too. The 2020 Porsche Taycan took home the 2020 World Luxury Car award, beating out the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Porsche 911. This was not such a surprise victory but the Taycan also won 2020 World Performance Car, winning over its siblings, the 911 and 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4.
