If the Bugatti Veyron is known for one thing, it's speed. This was a car with performance that was way ahead of its time – Jeremy Clarkson even described it as the Concorde of its day. Now, the Veyron's legacy will live on with the insanely-fast, 1,500 horsepower Chiron. Turns out not even DriveTribe's Jethro Bovingdon could prepare himself for the awesome acceleration of the Veyron's mighty successor.

After reminding us why the 1,200-hp Bugatti Veyron Super Sport isn't just a 'numbers car,' DriveTribe's Editor-at-Large Jethro Bovingdon found himself riding shotgun with Bugatti's Test Driver Loris Bicocchi, who took him for a brief spin in the Chiron. Not that we envy him, or anything.

Truth be told, the Chiron doesn't get the full workout we were hoping for on a racetrack. Instead, it's taken for a quick test drive on a road near Bugatti's headquarters in France. But even that is enough to give you an idea of the mind-bending acceleration the Chiron is capable of, as Bovingdon is forced back into his seat. You can't blame him for grinning like a child the entire time. It's not surprising, given that the rapid acceleration generated from the Chiron's 8.0-liter, W16 quad-turbocharged engine will make it rocket from 0-62 mph in under 2.6 seconds. It's capable of reaching 310 mph according to its speedometer, but Bugatti has limited it to 261 mph.

And yet despite such potent power, the Chiron can morph into a relaxing long-distance cruiser by switching modes and softening the dampers. Does this convince you that the Bugatti will once again redefine the hypercar as we know it?
