CLE Coupe

As you may know, Mercedes-Benz is slimming its product offering down, and one of the ways it aims to do this is by replacing the C-Class and E-Class coupes and convertibles with just one model. This new offering will be called the Mercedes-Benz CLE, and we've caught it out testing numerous times over the past year. Most recently, we were able to confirm that the luxury coupe and its convertible twin will be getting plug-in hybrid power, and now our spy photographers have captured development models out testing again. This time, we were able to get some images of the new arrival's cabin.

If you were expecting something special, sorry - the CLE will follow the same interior recipe as other recent and upcoming Mercedes models.

That means it gets a new steering wheel design with a thick round rim and a rounded airbag cover in the center. It also means you get a portrait-oriented center infotainment display sitting below a trio of HVAC vents. The driver gets a landscape-oriented digital display, but the dashboard is covered, so we can't see much more.

Nevertheless, we don't expect any major changes. It seems that Mercedes will apply the same layout to pretty much all of its cars going forward. That's cool for buyers of models on the lower end of the scale, but if you're spending six figures on an S-Class, you surely don't want it to look the same as a CLA inside.

From the outside, nothing new is evident. The model you see here doesn't appear to be wearing any warning decals indicating it's a hybrid of any sort, but we do know that there will be pure ICE models on offer too. Nothing is yet confirmed, but the base CLE 300 is predicted to be powered by a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot developing 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, the same you get in the C 300 Sedan. If that seems a little tame, an electrified AMG CLE 43 model is rumored to produce a healthy 402 hp. A beefier 63 model is likely to follow too.

The CLE 63 is expected to again borrow its powertrain from the sedan version, which is due to be unveiled later this week. This will also feature a 2.0-liter four-pot turbo with hybrid assistance. In this case, the four-banger will generate 473 hp on its own, while the electric system will contribute to a total output of 670 hp with 553 lb-ft of torque. It remains to be seen exactly how this will be delivered to the ground, but AWD of some sort is sure to be employed so that you spend more on gas than you do on tires, which will be lit up with ease.

We'll know all about the Mercedes-AMG C63 on 21 September, but the CLE you see here is only expected to be revealed at the tail end of 2022 or early next year.
