"This track once grew champions...now it only grows weeds and dead grass."
Welcome to North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, home of North Wilkesboro Speedway, a now abandoned NASCAR track. It’s been out of service for four years and it looks like a post-apocalyptic world. All it’s missing are a few zombies stumbling around. The track was in operation from 1947 until 1996, and then re-opened briefly in 2010. And this is what it looks like today. Photographed by Seph Lawless for his book "The Last Lap...The North Wilkesboro Speedway is Losing a Race Against Time," it's a sad reminder of a lost and forgotten America.
This was America," Seph Lawless writes. "Gone were the sounds of the car engines roaring. The squealing of the race car tires as they hugged every curve of the track. Gone was the smell of burning rubber and fuel. All that's left now is skid marks and the broken memories of a NASCAR champion." Photos used with permission from Seph Lawless.
