Chevrolet is going after the Mustang Boss 302.
Not wanting the Ford Mustang Boss 302 to have all of the fun and attention (not to mention the sales numbers and prestige), Chevrolet has just announced details for the 2013 Camaro 1LE Performance Package. The automaker claims that the upcoming 2013 Camaro SS with the 1LE package is :one of the most affordable, most capable track-day cars offered by any manufacturer." Considering that pricing starts at under $40,000, we're inclined to believe them.
Chevrolet claims the 1LE Performance Package is targeted towards amateur track-day racers and that they're currently pursuing SCCA approval for the package to enter the Touring Class competition. Chevrolet also stated that the package will only be offered on the 213 Camaro SS coupe that's powered by the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 mated to a six-speed manual. They've also added some exterior touches such as the ZL1's 20-inch, 10-spoke aluminum wheels, a matte-black hood, functional front splitter and a rear spoiler. Some performance features include monotube rear shocks, larger front and rear stabilizers, a strengthened rear-axle and a strut tower brace.
Optional items include variable-rate electric power steering (also from the ZL1) and a dual-mode exhaust system. The interior also receives some ZL1 influence such as the flat-bottom steering wheel and short-throw shifter trimmed in microfiber. The Camaro SS 1LE Performance Package will go on sale this fall.
