Only the other day we received a report essentially confirming the 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette will come powered by General Motor's newish 6.2-liter LT2 V8. Although it's essentially an LT1 V8 with various upgrades, output has been increased from 455 hp to somewhere between 480 hp and 500 hp. We'll know all the details in about a week's time. There is, however, another engine at GM's disposal that could also do a fine job powering the first-ever mid-engined Corvette. No, we're not talking about a turbocharged four or six-cylinder, but rather the one and only Blackwing V8.

This 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is, for now, exclusively offered in the 2020 Cadillac CT6-V. With a claimed 455 hp on tap and a lovely 627 lb-ft of torque, it would make a certain degree of business sense for GM to make further use of this engine in its flagship high-performance sports car.

But no, it's not going to happen, in fact, Chevy hasn't even tried stuffing the Blackwing into the C8. MuscleCarsandTrucks.com spoke with GM vice president Mark Reuss about this possibility and his words were crystal clear. "We can do anything with enough time and money, but we're not sure we want to do (that) because it's Cadillac exclusive." We've heard something like those words before.

Cadillac president Steve Carlisle is in no mood to share this engine with other GM brands because he feels Cadillac needs to have something that belongs to it entirely. He's got a point. If Cadillac ever wants to permanently establish itself as a serious player in the ultra-competitive luxury market, then it needs exclusivity where it can get it. The Blackwing V8 fits the bill.

However, the Blackwing's basic architecture is under no such restrictions. Developing an all-new engine family from scratch for a single brand makes little financial sense. Unknown sources told MuscleCarsandTrucks.com upcoming C8 variants will eventually receive even higher output versions of that engine architecture. When will this happen? No clue right now. All we know is that next week's C8 reveal will include that updated LT2 naturally aspirated V8. Cadillac will keep the Blackwing all to itself and everything will remain peaceful within GM.
