Chevy Spotted Putting The Silverado EV Through Its Paces

Teaser / Comments

Is it really a "spy shot" if the manufacturer shares the photo itself? That's a question that's becoming increasingly more common in recent months. Automakers want to get the most mileage out of their latest vehicle reveals, so they will often share pictures of an upcoming new model, usually wearing some sort of camouflage. General Motors is the latest OEM to engage in this practice, with CEO Mary Barra taking to Twitter to share an image of a new vehicle undergoing testing.

"Spotted a Chevrolet Silverado EV being put through its paces at the GM Milford Proving Ground. Looking forward to seeing your photos of these trucks in the wild when they start testing on Detroit streets next month," Barra tweeted.

The single image (included above) shows the Silverado EV that we've seen in full pre-production guise since earlier year. This prototype is clearly a test mule, as-evidenced by the unfinished wheel arches. GMC showed similar photos during the Hummer EV Pickup's development phase. Unlike when GM teased the Corvette Hybrid, Barra's tweet doesn't share any new information regarding the Silverado EV aside from showing that it's entering a new phase of testing.

As a reminder, the 2024 Silverado EV promises up to 664 horsepower and a 400-mile range, both of which will outgun the Ford F-150 Lightning. Two trims will be available at launch, including an RST First Edition and WT (Work Truck) model starting at $39,900. Chevy has also teased a Trail Boss off-road model, which won't arrive until later.

Chevy has taken an interesting approach with its electric Silverado, giving it a radically different body than the gas-powered model, unlike the F-150 Lightning. The Silverado EV also brings back the Multi-Flex Midgate from the Avalanche, adding in a frunk for additional storage. After the Silverado, GMC will get its own version of this truck badged as a Sierra. Judging by Barra's teaser and announcement that on-road testing will begin next month, it seems likely that Chevy will meet its goal to deliver the Silverado EV by Fall 2023. Tesla says its Cybertruck will arrive in mid-2023, so these two trucks may battle each other immediately.
