With the long driving distances we have in the US, the Chevy Volt is really the closest thing to practical you can get from an EV. Poor sales of EVs in China would suggest that Chinese customers don't feel that EVs are all that practical either, but that didn't stop Shanghai GM from rolling out their new Sail EV at the 2010 Guangzhou Auto Show. GM did play it safe with this one and didn't try to design a whole new car.
Rather, they just pulled the gasoline engine out of their popular New Sail and put an electric motor in its place. Safe was probably the way to play this one as well, since there is nothing particularly special about the Sail EV. Performance, range, and charging times are all pretty much the same as all of those other EVs that they can't seem to sell in China.
