Named after the sound made by the engine, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a car like no other.
One of the best-loved children's movies of all time, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang centered on an eccentric professor and his transformed old jalopy with magical powers. A project that began life in 1998, the replica has been constructed totally from scratch apart from the Ford V6 engine and automatic transmission that were used in the original film car with help from Oscar winner Peter Lamont, assistant art director on the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang movie.
He was able to advise on techniques used in the car's construction and the companies original involved. The ladder frame chassis was thus painstakingly recreated from original plans, and the boat tail's woodwork was built with help from the original film car's builder, taking just under three years to complete. The wheels were cast from the original wheels, the leather seats made at Pinewood Studios where the film was made, and the polished aluminum hood & mudguards, backet rack & wings, and brass metalwork were all entrusted to companies affiliated with the original film car and other specialists.
This is perhaps the most instantly recognizable promotional vehicle in existence and represents an excellent marketing opportunity for someone to earn a small fortune. Bonhams UK estimates the car will go for £240,000 to £270,000, which represents great value-for-money for this one-off replica masterpiece.
