Coachbuilt Volvo XC90 Becomes Wacky Luxury Off-Roader With Gullwing Doors

Tuning / 8 Comments

DC2 has turned a perfectly nice Volvo XC90 into the weird off-roader you see here.

India-based coachbuilder DC2 has revealed its latest creation, a bizarre off-roader with Gullwing doors and Volvo XC90 underpinnings. Yes, you read that correctly: this wacky-looking vehicle is based on a sensible Swedish SUV.

Not that you would ever know because DC2 has left no trace of the Scandinavian roots. The company refers to the vehicle as a DC2 Bespoke Design, which suggests this is a one-off designed for a customer with, er, distinctive tastes.

The front end is dominated by a massive radiator grille with red accents. The headlights are cleverly concealed within the large mesh pattern, along with what appear to be the turn signals. A clamshell hood stretches all the way down to the squared-off wheel arches, which house black and red wheels wrapped in chunky all-terrain rubber.

Viewed from the front, you'd be forgiven for thinking this custom creation is a pickup truck, but that's not the case.

The coupe-esque rear fascia is, perhaps, more successful than the front treatment. A Porsche-style light bar stretches across the rear bumper but is overshadowed by the massive rear vent that mirrors the front grille. Two square exhaust pipes are situated in the center and lend the vehicle some sporting flair.

Of course, the gullwing doors are the most eye-catching aspect of the vehicle. It's certainly an interesting creation, and no one would be able to resist turning their head to get a closer look. Overall, it reminds us of the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution MPR12, the legendary competition vehicle that dominated the Dakar Rally in the early 2000s.

It appears as if the side windows aren't able to be rolled up or down. Look closely, and you'll notice a small, sliding vent in the side glass. Despite the utilitarian exterior, the interior is decidedly plush and luxurious, boasting the same restrained design you'd find in a regular Volvo.

DC2's creation, however, boasts orange and red leather accents - enlivening the design with funky colors. Unlike the donor vehicle, there are just four seats in the cabin. Then again, Volvo also offers a four-seat version of the XC90 called the Excellence.

Look up at the headliner of this wild build and the side trimmings, and you'll notice the illuminated leather pockets. This puts one in mind of a private jet. It's certainly the best aspect of the vehicle and sits at odds with the rugged exterior.

It's certainly not the most bizarre custom car we have seen, but DC2's creation gets very close. The company makes no mention of price or availability. If you want one, for some reason, just remember: a perfectly lovely XC90 will have to make the ultimate sacrifice.
