Back in September it remained doubtful whether Volkswagen would sell the new Golf R in the US. The reason why was pricing, as the automaker claimed that exchange rates could force them to charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000 for the car. Clearly US buyers wouldn't be willing to pay that. Today, however, The Truth About Cars is claiming VW of America will in fact unveil the US spec 2015 Golf R at Detroit next week.

The hot hatch will supposedly have 290 horsepower, which is roughly 6 hp less than its European counterpart that debuted in Frankfurt. However, the US Golf R will only be offered as a five-door hatch and won't go on sale until early 2015. Compared to the GTI, the Golf R features an upgraded suspension, a new body kit, LED daytime lights, and a four-tip exhaust. We'll have full details from VW in just a few days.
