OK, first off, let's remind you that we don't make the news - or the Vette - we just report it. Whether you think automatic transmissions belong in a Corvette or not, Chevy's new eight-speed automatic will be added to the seventh-generation Corvette Stingray by 2016. While it will surely debut in the manic Z06, Chevy officials are unclear about its appearance date in the stock Corvettes, telling Auto Guide: "The question would be: 'do you do it in 15 or 16?'"

The automatic paddle-shift transmission will be added to the seven-speed manual, replacing the initial option of a six-speed automatic. As mentioned, it will first roll out on the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 Z06, where it will do its best to keep up with 625 hp and 635 lb-ft of torque. Chevy's engineers will then adapt the gearbox to the Stingray coupe and convertible, mating it to their 460-hp LT1 6.2 liter V8. Making the 2014 Car of the Year even more attractive to automatic-gearhead buyers, the 8-speed should further improve the Vette's standing with automatic shoppers - whatever you may think of them.
