It wasn't all that long ago that hot hatches were very much a niche market in the US. But thanks to the longtime success of the VW GTI, and now the Ford Focus ST and Fiesta ST, the segment is becoming more mainstream. In Europe, hot hatches have been held in high regard for many years. Why? Because rallying and, well, they were affordable fun. America had its muscle cars, Europe its hot hatches, and both continents took them very seriously. The Renault R5 Turbo, launched in 1980, is a perfect example of the latter.
This little French firecracker has its turbocharged engine mid-mounted, producing a total of 158 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque. Oh, and it's rear-wheel-drive and weighs just over 2,100 lbs.
