De Tomaso's Next Supercar Will Be Designed By Batman's Coachbuilder

Best start practicing that Batman voice.

De Tomaso's revival took place in 2019, and since then, it has been working on a production supercar called the P72. The P72 is currently in the final stages of the homologation process, and it's slated to begin production in early 2023?

But what then? That answer has been answered with the appointment of Ash Thorp as De Tomaso's Digital Artist and Designer. Thorp will be responsible for designing De Tomaso's future "digital artwork" and "time machines."

The time machine part of the job description seems to refer to recreating famous cars from De Tomaso's history. The P72 is an homage to the P70 race car created by Carroll Shelby in the 1960s.

The most logical next step is a modern version of the Mangusta, to go up against the Ferrari F8 Tributo.

Oddly, Ash Thorp has little experience with the automotive world, but that's all part of the De Tomaso strategy. "We will provide opportunities to those with non-traditional automotive backgrounds to push the limits of what is possible as the digital and physical worlds coalesce," said De Tomaso in a statement.

"De Tomaso has a deep history of working with, cultivating, and nurturing some of the greatest designers in automotive history; Giorgetto Giugiaro, Tom Tjaarda, Peter Brock, Marcello Gandini, Jowyn Wong, amongst various others. This is merely the start of our mission to further carry our distinguished design legacy by creating opportunity, cultivating talent, and providing a platform for the next generation of Digital Artists," said Norman Choi, Chairman of De Tomaso Automobili.

Ash Thorp does have an impressive resume as a multidisciplinary artist. He has experience in motion graphics, VFX, concept art, photography, illustration, animation, and film directing. Thorp's career includes designing conceptual art for movies like Ender's Game, Total Recall, and Ghost in the Shell.

His main link to the automotive world is his work on the upcoming Batman movie, imaginatively called, The Batman. Thorp was the principal designer behind the all-new Batmobile, a significant departure from any Batmobile that came before. We're big fans of the new design.

If De Tomaso could bring that to life, we'd be willing to sell one kidney and 70% of a liver to get our hands on one.

"I come from very humble beginnings and have worked extremely hard for decades to manifest the dreams I've had since I was a child. Joining an iconic automotive team was always a wishful goal of mine, and I am overjoyed and humbled with gratitude to achieve this reality with De Tomaso. So to align with De Tomaso is incredibly surreal for me; I'm living my dream," said Ash Thorp.
