Just over a year ago, it was announced that the DeLorean would be making an official comeback with the assistance of Italdesign. Our first update on the project has now arrived, with the company confirming that the upcoming model will be an electric vehicle courtesy of a short teaser video. An electric DeLorean will mimic other electrified revivals of iconic cars such as the GMC Hummer and Renault 5.

The short teaser video doesn't reveal much about the upcoming product but we do see a front silhouette that shows off the signature gullwing doors and boxy panels as well as a caption reading "The future was never promised. Reimagine today" together with a link that leads you to a newsletter submission.

In anticipation of the new product, the company has filed a series of trademarks for logos with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent filings reveal that these are set to be used on clothing items such as hoodies, bags, caps, and more. These pieces can be found on the site with asking prices of $125 for a fleece hoodie and $49 for a simple tee. Pushing merchandise is usually a great way to raise hype for an upcoming product and generate funding for production.

These designs have been filed for use on automobiles and dealerships as well, which means it's highly plausible that these fonts are what we can expect to see used as official badging for the final product. The V-shaped logo is a minimalist impression of the car's gullwing doors. It would be odd to see this used as some form of model badging, but it can be applied to some trimmings in and around the car.

Bear in mind that this DeLorean Motor Company is not the same as the one started by John DeLorean in 1975, which subsequently went bust in 1982. The group running operations now is a Texas-based firm that has since acquired all of the relevant trademarks for the retro sportscar and currently acts as a support and service center for DMC-12 units that are still on the road. Authorized dealerships can be found in Florida, California, and Illinois.

Thanks to the Low Volume Act, DeLorean Motor Company announced that it would be constructing a short run of fresh examples. The organization planned that 50 to 100 cars would be produced every year and would adhere to the specifications of the 1981-1983 generation model. It's understood that the first examples of these would have entered production in early 2020.
