German manufacturers have, of late, been making more of an effort to offer diesel options for their cars in the US market. It has been a slow process, but Porsche has taken it one step further and decided to offer a diesel in place of a four-cylinder base model in the US for the upcoming Macan. The Macan S Diesel will arrive on US shores after the Macan S and Macan Turbo, and will be the only model of the three with a price tag under $50,000.

The European market will be getting a four-cylinder model, but the parent company of VW is more concerned about brand hierarchy in the US, and a four-cylinder Macan would likely threaten Audi Q5 sales. The vehicles are indeed based on the same platform, and the Macan diesel will therefore use the same engine as the Q5 diesel, as well as several other Audi models. The 3.0-liter V6 produces 258 horsepower and 428lb-ft of torque. It is also rated at 31mpg on the highway, and it will help Porsche a lot in terms of CAFE ratings.
