Dodge infamously bowed out of NASCAR racing at the end of 2012. This disappointed many fans, as Dodge has historically been synonymous with American-based racing.

Dodge might be coming back to NASCAR following an announcement made by the ex-NASCAR driver, Robby Gordon.

According to Gordon, he has been in talks with Dodge, and it looks like Gordon and his team will build the next-generation Dodge. As you might recall, Dodge's departure from the sport was quite controversial. At the end of the 2012 season, there was no interest in Dodge's powertrains. Most teams moved over to Roush-prepared Ford engines, leaving Dodge with no customers.

Dodge was already under the ownership of FCA, which preferred spending the money earmarked for motorsport on Formula 1.

The president of NASCAR, Steve Phelps, has been very conservative on the topic, choosing his words very carefully. In an interview with SportsSkeeda, he would not confirm or deny the rumors.

"It's been widely rumored that Dodge is one of those or closest. I won't confirm or deny that. It is important. We've made no bones about the fact that we want to have a new OEM in our sport. I think we got delayed with the pandemic. With that said, we are an attractive place I believe for OEMs to come into the sport. Now is an important opportunity for them to do that because of the Next-Gen car. I would suggest things are progressing or I would say that things are progressing. When we have something to announce, we will," said Phelps.

Dodge currently competes in NHRA sanctioned drag racing events. Dodge products are now at the top of the Funny Car and Pro Stock Series.

If you missed it, years ago, the NHRA took a strong stance against production car drag racing. In short, cars that could run nines without roll cages were banned from NHRA events. This ban was reversed recently, allowing cars like the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and Tesla Model S Plaid to compete in NHRA sanctioned events.

We hope this rumor turns out to be true because it would be great to see Dodge back on America's favorite motorsport grid.
