When you picture the typical Gofundme campaign, you think of a family earning minimum wage trying to pay for their kid's leukemia treatment, an aspiring doctor trying to get med school tuition, and the occasional sly teenager who's trying to get their hands on the latest game console with a pity story. But the site is also full of unconventional grass roots efforts, like the Take Back The Ring campaign that seeks to put the Dodge Viper ACR back on the Nurburgring lap time leaderboard.

The fundraiser is put on by the Viper Club of America and has recently surpassed its goal of raising $159,000, blowing past it by procuring a sum of $165,160, to pay for supplies, transportation, and fees associated with a Nurburgring record attempt. This means that it's go time. Originally, the organizers wanted to make the record run in April, but a post to the VCA Facebook page confirms that the attempt is now planned for July. The ViperExchange is supplying two Viper ACR Extremes that will be raced by two internationally-known Viper drivers, Dominik Farnbacher and Luca Stolz, who know the Ring like the back of their hands. Farnbacher already set the previous Viper record after securing a time of 7:12.13 around the track.

The problem with the ambitious goal is that the bar for fastest production car lap has been set higher since the Viper's original run in 2011. To break the record, the drivers have to shave 28.93 seconds off of the previous ACR lap time to match the McLaren P1 GTR or 20.13 seconds to tie the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. That is no small feat, but the passion these guys have for the Viper is no casual enthusiasm. "Our beloved Viper has set 13 track records in the US. Let's go back to Nurburgring and re-take the ultimate international crown as we sail into the sunset," reads the Gofundme page. Whether determination is enough to make up neatly half a minute of track time remains to be seen, but we'll be tuned in to watch.
