Does It Matter If Your BMW 3 Series Is Made In Germany Or Mexico?

Germany alone can't handle all 3 Series demand.

BMW is beginning production at this time for its all-new G20 generation 3 Series. Because demand is expected to be high in not only the US and Europe, but other markets as well, there will be more than one factory building the latest version of the benchmark sport sedan. There's a production plant in Germany along with the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico and another facility in Shenyang, China. But does it matter, really, where your new 3-Series is built?

According to Bimmerpost, it might. The first G20 3 Series built at San Luis Potosi will reportedly not include the Luxury Package and the M Sport Package, as well as the Power Tailgate and Rear Seat Heating. In addition, the following exterior paint colors will not be offered: Glacier Silver Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, and Mediterranean Blue Metallic.

The information came to Bimmerpost from a dealership bulletin. Can't say this is entirely unusual, but it could potentially cause some problems for BMW down the line, depending on what features and packages 3 Series customers opt for most. However, BMW Blog believes those who place an order for a 3 Series with any of those aforementioned items and trim packages will simply have their order allocated to the German production plant instead. In other words, it probably won't matter where you live because BMW will make sure your 3 Series is built at the facility best suited to do so. But we don't think the new Mexican plant will lag behind its German counterpart for too long.

BMW completed construction of this facility earlier this year at a cost of $1 billion. It will have a capacity of up to 150,000 cars a year, and its location is perfectly suited for North American orders. Last October, the San Luis Potosi plant revealed its first ever completed BMW, an Alpine White 3 Series with the Sport Line package.
