This shows how insanely fast luxury four-door cars have become.
If you wanted to buy a high-performance wagon in America, for a long time the Mercedes-AMG E63 Wagon was your only choice. But now there's a new alternative, as the Audi RS6 Avant has arrived in America. While they are not huge sellers, it's hard not to love fast wagons since they offer practicality comparable to SUVs without compromising the performance. To find out if the Audi RS6 Avant is the ultimate four-door luxury performance car, YouTube channel CAR Buyers Guide pitted it against a Mercedes-AMG E63 S Sedan in a head-to-head in a drag race.
Under the hood, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 generating 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. On paper, this enables the high-performance luxury sedan to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph.
The Audi RS6 Avant, also uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, but this one is rated at 591 hp and 590 lb-ft. Both cars have all-wheel drive, but the RS6 Avant is a tenth of a second slower off the line than the Mercedes. It also has a lower top speed of 174 mph and is around 200 pounds heavier.
Despite these setbacks, the RS6 Avant still manages to hold its own. In the quarter-mile drag race, the RS6 Avant accelerates off the line quicker, but the more powerful and lighter Mercedes quickly pulls ahead of the Audi, resulting in a close fight to the finish.
On one run, the Mercedes recorded a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds, which is impressive considering the track conditions. It's a shame a Mercedes-AMG E63 Wagon wasn't used for a more equal comparison, but the video is still a great illustration of how insanely fast four-door luxury cars have become - now we just need the BMW M3 Wagon to come to America.
