Engine Teardown Shows How Poor Maintenance Killed This Ford EcoBoost

It appears that this 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine from a Ford Escape did not have a happy life.

Another dead Ford EcoBoost engine teardown has revealed that while the EcoBoost engines are meant to operate more efficiently than naturally-aspirated engines with larger displacements, certain factors can still affect reliability. That was what presenter Eric would discover in this engine sourced from a Ford Escape.

There were no tags, so Eric could not determine from which specific model year the engine was used. The mill was said to be sitting upside down outside, hence damages such as rusting were expected to be seen throughout the internal parts.

The long teardown work started with removing the spark plugs of the inline-four engine. As expected, rusting was already visible. Aside from that, the spark plugs weren't worn.

What showed significant damage was the turbocharger, a key piece of the EcoBoost series. Eric wasn't surprised considering the engine was sitting, making it vulnerable to weather.

Another thing you wouldn't want to see was oil in the high-pressure fuel pump. Eric suspected the engine could have a faulty oil system, and the only way to find out was to carry on with the teardown. He could be right because after removing the valve cover, he saw excessive oil with metal flakes. Rusting was also found on the camshaft gears.

Like the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine Eric tore down before, the crank sprocket was not keyed, which, he said, could be a product of cost-cutting measures. The camshafts' conditions and caps were also said to be "not great." The same goes for the two pistons, with one drowning in water and rust.

And yes, rust was one of the main reasons for this engine's demise. However, after a thorough teardown, Eric also discovered oil-related issues. The presenter concluded this could have been caused by poor maintenance and not necessarily by engine design. It is a similar issue to the 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 he tore down weeks ago.
