BMW presented the polarizing Concept 4 at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show, which suggests the production version of the next-generation 4 Series should arrive soon. The Concept 4 previewed BMW's bold new design direction for the new 4 Series, M3, and M4 that will distinguish the Coupe from the regular 3 Series with their ginormous grilles. Now, BMWBlog has revealed new technical details about the new 4 Series that will please enthusiasts.

According to its sources, the new M440i will be available with both RWD and AWD worldwide. While the M340i is also available with RWD in the US, this isn't the case in other parts of the world, but the M440i will buck this trend.

It's not all good news, however, because reports suggest the new M440i won't be offered with a manual transmission, which means an eight-speed automatic will be the only transmission option. On the flip side, BMW recently confirmed the you'll be able to row your own gears in the new M3 and M4.

When it enters production, the new 4 Series should share the same engine options as its 3 Series sibling, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 horsepower in the 430i variant and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 380 hp in the M440i. The new M4, on the other hand, will utilize a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six producing between 444 hp and 500 hp. The new 4 Series will also be based on BMW's CLAR modular architecture and will be up to 100 pounds lighter than the current model as a result.

BMW hasn't confirmed when the new 4 Series Coupe will be unveiled, but it's expected to debut by the end of this year and go on sale next year. The next-generation M4, on the other hand, is expected to debut alongside the new M3 in the middle of next year and go on sale as a 2021 model.
