When it arrived in 2017, the McLaren 720S offered unprecedented performance. As soon as people got behind the wheel of the automaker's new Super Series, they discovered it had more power than McLaren claimed. Officially, the McLaren 720S produces 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque from a 4.0-liter V8, but dyno runs have revealed it could be producing closer to 800 hp. It didn't take long for videos to emerge online of the 720S defeating far more powerful supercars such as the Lamborghini Huracan Performante at the drag strip and setting faster quarter-mile times than a Porsche 918 Spyder.

Three years later, the McLaren 720S is still one of the most capable and best value supercars currently on sale. But how does it stack up against the newer Ford Mustang Shelby GT500? As the video below demonstrates, the Stang doesn't come close.

Under the hood, the Shelby GT500 is powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 that sends 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, enabling the powerful pony car to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds. McLaren claims the 720s will do the same sprint in 2.8 seconds. This GT500 is not stock, however. To increase the power, the car has been fitted with a cold air intake, high-flow catalytic converters, and an ECU tune. These modifications increase the output to 800 hp on 93 high-octane fuel. That's around 100 more ponies than the 720S.

While the GT500 has a power advantage, it also has a serious disadvantage: weight. With a fuel tank of gas, the GT500 weighed a hefty 4,233 pounds when it was put on a set of scales, while the 720S weighs 3,200 pounds. In a series of rolling drag races on a highway, the GT500 is no match for the McLaren 720S, which gains a massive lead in all three races and leaves the GT500 in its dust.

It's worth remembering the massive price difference between these two cars. Whereas the 720S will set you back at least $299,000, the GT500 has a starting price tag of $70,300, making it a performance bargain. However, it's not clear how much the owner paid for the modifications made to their GT500.
