It’s arguable that even though the Porsche Panamera Turbo and BMW M760Li can be lobbed into the same category without much doubt (similar price and performance mean the two cars rank equally on paper), each takes a very different approach to reach the finished product. The BMW starts its life as a large long-wheelbase luxury sedan complete with all the creature comforts and, aside from the 7 Series’ Cluster Architecture, not a care in the world for weight.
The Porsche, on the other hand, is what happens when Stuttgart tries to cross-breed a 911 with something akin to the 7 Series. Call it collusion between the German automakers or not, but the fact of the matter is that both cars do so well in the luxury and performance realms that the means to the each end are almost irrelevant.
But which gets the combination down right best? That’s quite hard to nail down. Fitted with a 600 horsepower 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 engine straight from a Rolls-Royce, this 7 Series is the most powerful car BMW has ever made. It’s also the quickest and arguably the most luxurious, but that in no way means the Porsche is the automatic loser. With a 550 horsepower 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 powering the sporty-looking Panamera Turbo, it has plenty of grunt to get off the line and show the BMW who’s boss. Not only that but Porsche intended the Panamera to be a corner carver from day one while the 7 Series' athleticism is included as an afterthought. So which wins the comparo? That depends on what you're measuring.
