It'll be a great addition to Mazda's SUV family.
Expected to debut next month, the Mazda CX-50 is one of five new SUVs expected to expand the Japanese automaker's lineup over the next few years. The SUV will have more coupe-like styling to set it apart from the CX-5 and will continue Mazda's move upmarket.
Although we await more details about the upcoming CX-50, we now have a better idea of what it will look like thanks to official patent images. We previously envisioned what the CX-50 may look like but the patent images reveal a few new styling cues, allowing us to more accurately recreate the look. In front, it has a smaller grille than expected but the five-sided grille design is clearly that of a Mazda.
We can also see small headlight clusters with a design that appears to almost flow into the grille. Lower down, there are some bold air intakes and horizontal LED lighting strips. A view of the rearmost pillar doesn't show the sloping roofline we expected, although it's hard to clearly pick this up in that specific patent image.
According to the latest information from the automaker, the CX-50 will debut in November and will share a platform with the smaller Mazda 3 and CX-30. The midsize crossover will offer "enhanced all-wheel-drive capabilities".
Production of the US-only CX-50 will start in January 2022 in Huntsville, Alabama, as part of a joint venture with Toyota. Previously, it was believed that the CX-50 would transition to a rear-wheel-drive platform and be powered by an inline-six engine but this will be reserved for a new large platform that will underpin the likes of the CX-90 and CX-70.
The CX-50 will be sold alongside the CX-5 so we're hopeful that it'll be topped by the 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter engine found in the CX-5 and Mazda 3. We expect the CX-50 to have a premium cabin with lots of features if the CX-5 is anything to go by.
The current Mazda CX-5 is priced from just over $25,000, so the new CX-50 should start at a little more than that. That means it will still comfortably undercut other coupe-style SUVs from Germany like the BMW X2. Trim details, pricing, and the design of the CX-50 will be shared closer to the on-sale date so we expect this information to land sometime over the next few weeks.
