The Top Gear track has a new king.
You may recall that the Ferrari 488 Pista recently set a new lap record at a famous German race track. No, we’re not talking about the Nurburgring: the Italian exotic supercar set an impressive time of one minute and 45.9 seconds at the Hockenheim circuit, beating the previous record holder, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, by 1.4 seconds. And now the Ferrari 488 Pista has set yet another lap record, this time at the famous Top Gear test track.
In the opening episode of Top Gear season 27, we got to see Chris Harris tear up the track in the Ferrari 488 Pista. With comedian Paddy McGuinness and former cricketer Freddie Flintoff now hosting the show, the BBC is hoping to attract a wider audience. The gamble has paid off so far, as the first episode was praised by fans. Harris, on the other hand, will cater for car enthusiasts with his tire-smoking road tests, and his review of the Ferrari 488 Pista was both informative and thoroughly entertaining.
It’s safe to say its performance and agility put a huge smile on his face, as he was able to slide the track-focused supercar with ease. He even concluded the Ferrari 488 Pista is "the new benchmark for the track-focused supercar” while putting it head to head against the McLaren 600LT (a car he would take over the Ferrari, for the record).
As is traditional on Top Gear, the Ferrari 488 Pista was then driven by the Stig in a timed lap to find out how fast it could go round the Top Gear test track. Sadly, we didn't get to see it in the episode, but Top Gear's YouTube channel has uploaded the on-board lap in full. Expectations were high, but remarkably the 488 Pista managed to set a new Top Gear lap record with a time of one minute and 12.7 seconds. That makes it the fastest road-legal car to lap the famous airstrip circuit, beating the Porsche 911 GT2 RS by over a half-second. We suspect it will be a very long time before that time ever gets beaten.
The Ferrari 488 Pista’s latest achievement isn’t at all surprising when you look at the car’s specs. Power is provided by a retuned 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 that delivers 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to reach 62 mph from a standstill in 2.85 seconds and top out at 211 mph.
