Fiat 600 May Finally Be The Replacement For The Terrible 500X Crossover

Spy Shots / 2 Comments

Fiat will use the historic 600 badge on its new crossover.

After eight years on sale, spy photos have confirmed that a replacement for the 2023 Fiat 500X is undergoing testing.

As a reminder, the 500X is a compact crossover that shares a platform with the Jeep Renegade/Compass and the discontinued 500L. It was initially introduced as the third member of the 500 family but is the only one that remains on sale in the USA.

We've never been fans of the 500X, but this replacement model, rumored to be called the Fiat 600, can succeed where its predecessor failed. The 600 will likely ride on Fiat's new STLA Small platform, compatible with gasoline engines and electric motors/battery packs. This is the same architecture used by the upcoming Jeep Avenger, which won't be sold in the USA.

The test mule shown in these pictures is likely the gasoline variant, as evidenced by the grill openings and lack of "electric vehicle" stickers.

There is no visible exhaust, but it could be tucked away under the rear bumper. Fiat never built an Abarth version of the 500X, but this new 600 could spawn a sportier version before the brand goes fully electric. Abarth is also going electric, and that's another route Fiat could follow.

The Avenger is already on sale in the UK, and the front-wheel-drive EV is driven by a 154 horsepower motor. The claimed range is 243.6 miles. Jeep's Avenger will also be sold in ICE guise, most likely powered by turbocharged engines borrowed from the Dodge Hornet and Alfa Tonale.

The spy photos show a glimpse of the interior, where we can see a circular digital instrument cluster and a large central touchscreen.

Both of these look like massive upgrades over the 500X. It seems unlikely the 600 will be sold in the US since the company's CEO has already stated that Fiat wants to be a one-model brand over here. And that one model is the 500e, which is already confirmed for 2024.

More details about the Fiat 600 should come in the second half of 2023, including its potential availability in North America.
